
Aphrodite
The Cilicia Aphrodisias which is 48 km distant to Silifke is known as Koreselik/ Gokada/ Ada among the local people. The Aphrodisias ancient city was sold to the summer house Cooperative founded by Ankara industrialists and the businessmen in 1976, together with the great region in the north and it has been known as “Tisan Summer Village” since the summer building construction which started in 1984. To the east of it is Akliman and to the northwest of it is Ovacik port. The ancient city was established on a wide peninsula overlooking the sea, and it has two brillant bays. The distance of the bays to one another is around 400 metre. The west bay of the peninsula which has two ports is also called as “Pirate Bay” by the local people. In the ancient city introduced to the science world in 1981 by Rudolf Heberdey; the German scholar Ludwig Budde made researches between 1967-70 and in 1987, he published his book named “St. Pantaleon von Aphrodisias in Kilikien.” The city, the name of which is recorded in the ancient shipping document titled Ps. Skylax written AD 101-102 – was used as a dwelling place in the Middle Ages and was called as Porto Cavaliere. The three kilometer peninsula located in south of the East and West bays – encircles city walls where people lived and a high plateau in the shape of a bowl, in the north and south of the plateau. Today, there is a path way, from which motorized off-road vehicles can travel around the walls. There is a temple which was built in BC VI century and which was turned into a church AD IV century; in the southeast of Aphrodisias in its East Bay, which has around 7-8 metres of height and which is approximately 3-4 metres distant to the shore.
